Local SEO secrets that actually work in 2025

Our local SEO playbook for ranking in Google Maps, laid out as a 60-day action plan.

Why local SEO is more critical than ever

A large share of Google searches are for something nearby, and “near me” searches keep growing. If your business isn’t visible in the top three Google Map Pack spots, you’re leaving serious revenue on the table.

The 60-day local SEO action plan

1. Optimize your Google Business Profile (GBP)

Your GBP is the foundation of local visibility. Fully complete every field, upload high-quality images, and post weekly updates.

  • Tip: Weekly posts keep your profile current and give searchers a reason to click through.
  • Add UTM parameters to track profile clicks in Google Analytics.

2. Citation stacking

Citations (business listings on directories) build trust and map visibility.

  • Core directories: Moz Local, Whitespark, Yext.
  • Pro tip: Layer secondary citations from industry-specific and regional sites. Example: a roofing company might list in RoofersGuild.com plus local chamber of commerce directories.

3. Review requests & reputation growth

Many consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations ( BrightLocal).

  • Ask every customer for a review after the job, by text and email, not just the ones you think are happy.
  • Make it easy: send your direct Google review link so customers land right on the review form.
  • Respond to every review, including the negative ones. A calm, helpful reply shows future customers how you handle problems.
  • Don’t filter unhappy customers away from your profile or offer anything in exchange for a review. Google’s review policy prohibits discouraging negative reviews or selectively asking only happy customers.

4. Location-optimized content

  • Localized keywords ("emergency plumber in Tulsa")
  • Driving directions from landmarks
  • Embedded Google Map

5. Geo-tagged images

Upload real photos of your jobs, team and location regularly. Some local marketers also add location data to photos (geotagging) before uploading them.

The secret sauce: authority stacking

Combine GBP posts, NAP-consistent citations, review growth, and geo-targeted content with a backlink push from local high-authority sources:

  • Sponsor a local charity run (link from their site)
  • Get featured in local news outlets like Tulsa World or WRAL News
  • Post guest articles on regional blogs
